Groveport Citizens Academy

by Theresa Garee

The inaugural Groveport Citizens Academy will take place in September. The academy is an opportunity for local residents to learn more about the city of Groveport and its distinct departments and how it operates.

This year Rachel Ricker organized the series after proposing the idea to the Groveport City Council in February. Ricker serves as clerk of courts for the city.

“We have 16 signed up, I think that is a good start,” Ricker said.

There was a long period of communication and discussion in order to make sure departments were available to participate in the academy. Most classes will take place after ‘office hours’ at 6 p.m.

The first week will cover the city’s government structure and finances. Following the initial week the following will be the class topics: public safety, public services, building and zoning, city development and engineering, community affairs, the golf course, human resources, the recreation center, the senior center, commissions and committees.

The local stops at city buildings will help teach the class about how these facilities affect Groveport residents.

“Today’s Senior Center is truly an activity hub for this group who choose to learn, laugh, create, socialize, and share with each other. While they may utilize technology, they would rather socialize and share interests with real people,” said Bob Dowler, Director of Senior Services and Transportation.

Dowler also directs the transportation services in the city. A service that assists many Groveport residents. Transportation services not only serve senior residents but also assists in GREAT (Groveport Rickenbacker Employee Access Transit) and special events throughout the year.

“The Citizens Academy is a wonderful step to better inform interested and committed citizens. We are hopeful for a successful first class that will highlight the service we provide and create demand for continued academies,” Dowler said.

The final week the academy will graduate in a closed ceremony at the Paddock Pub.

Following the graduation ceremony, the Paddock Pub will open to the public to host a volunteer night. Local organizations looking for volunteers are welcome to attend. Contact Rachel Ricker for more information, call 614-836-5301.
