Just before 3:30 p.m. July 30, a man allegedly walked through the front door of the Huntington Bank, brandished a gun and demanded that tellers fill two white bags with cash.
Groveport Police Chief Casey Adams said that after the tellers complied, the man grabbed the bags and ran from the building. He allegedly jumped into the passenger seat of a waiting vehicle and fled the scene.
Officers arrived within two minutes and alerted neighboring law enforcement agencies with descriptions of both the suspect and the vehicle. Flock cameras tracked the vehicle into south Columbus, where officers stopped it near the intersection of Groveport Road and Greenlawn Avenue.
The vehicle’s registered owner, Christopher Cubbage, 21, a transient, reportedly told police he had not been in possession of his vehicle at the time of the robbery. However, officers arrested him on charges of aiding and abetting and complicity to commit armed robbery.
“Nobody was injured, and there were no threats other than the money demands,” Adams said.
A crime of this nature is unusual for Groveport. The bank had not been robbed since 2017, when it was hit three times. The perpetrators in those cases were caught and convicted.
“We take crime against our area very seriously,” Adams said. “We also take it personally when someone takes advantage of our local businesses and instills fear. I want to ensure the community understands that we will investigate to the full extent of the law and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.”
As the investigation is ongoing, no additional details were available at press time.
